Carol composer competition

The Bach Choir has been running the annual Sir David Willcocks Carol Composer Competition every year since 2017 to provide opportunities for composers from all over the world and to add new carols to the repertoire.

Entrants compose a carol which is judged by their panel, which this year consisted of David Hill MBE, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Charlotte Harding and Carmen Ho. The winning compositions are then performed live at their Carols at Cadogan concert, which is one of their most cherished concerts of the year and often features a full house with nearly 1,000 attendees.

This year was one of the most well-subscribed ever in the history of the Carol Competition. There were an incredible 111 entries from as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Carols matter

Singing carols has a power to inspire and connect communities, making us healthier and happier. Whether they are sung in schools, pubs or in concert halls, carols are something that everyone can enjoy.

The Bach Choir run an annual competition to find and showcase the best carol composers in the world to keep the carolling tradition alive for future generations.

The Winners

Clive Osgood won this year’s competition jointly with Barbara Steadman-Allen. Clive wrote the carol Hodie Christus Natus Est for eight-part choir. It conveys the excitement of the birth of Jesus, using music in dance-like seven time. Clementine Dawson was the winner in the 17-and-under category.

Clive’s carol will be performed at the world premiere Carols at Cadogan concert on the 11th of December, and by the Queen’s Six during the HHH Concert on the 21st of December.
